Barefoot horse with toe abscessBandaged for continued turnout with epsom salt poultice, cotton, fiberglass cast. This works well with belligerent horses that can’t be soaked or horses without access to stalls. The hoof can still be soaked though the cast with additional poultice.Care must be made when putting on cast to keep it off of coronet band as this is blood supply for the hoof. Additionally, cotton is added with the poultice material as padding. The cast must be set prior to putting the horse’s foot down as to not push into the sole.
